Risk Factors and Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

2012-10-01 09:17

Chronic Kidney Disease becomes the potential killer in our lives for years, this is because once kidney impairment attacks, it is hard to reverse or correct. Sadly, people fail to attach enough attention to this problem even under such urgent situation. The disease becomes a real health concern along with high rate of high blood pressure and diabetes. This article provides information about how to prevent the disease from attacking, hope can help.

Here’s the definition of Chronic Kidney Disease by ISN (international society of nephrology) in 2005.

1. Kidney damages (renal structure or dysfunction) greater than or equal to 3 months, GFR declines or not and renal impairment can be found in lab tests.

2. GFR ≤60 ml/(min·1.73m2) having kidney damages or not.

Five stages are divided:

Stage 1—GFR is 90+, Normal kidney function but urine findings or structural abnormalities or genetic trait point to kidney disease

Stage 2—mildly reduced kidney function together with mild declined GFR

Stage 3—moderately declined kidney function

Stage 4—severely reduced kidney function

Stage 5—ESRD (End-stage Renal Disease)

Clinical symptoms

Unlike heart or stomach, kidneys will prefer to tolerate even though they don’t feel right. To make things worse, Chronic Kidney Disease would affect digestive tract, nerve, brain, muscle, respiratory tract, blood system, skin and bone etc.

Risk factor

Cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease, autoimmune disease, infection, tumor and some other systemic disease all could result in CKD. People at high risk of suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, hyperuricemia, hyperlipemia, heart disease, stroke, tumor, autoimmune disease, hepatitis B, repeated urinary tract infection, nephropyelitis, taking nephrotoxic drugs, older than 60 years old and family history etc.

Early detection

People with CKD present with no symptom at first, this is because kidneys have powerful compensatory ability. people who are at high risk of CKD should take early detection.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that if one wishes for a long life, he or she should protect their kidneys then. Healthy lifestyle could greatly help stop Chronic Kidney Disease from happening.
