What Symptoms of Diabetic Nephropathy Do You Have

2012-09-24 17:38

Diabetic Nephropathy is a chronic process, the early clinical manifestations are not obvious. When the illness condition develops to a certain degree, the following clinical symptoms may appear:

Proteinuria: It is the most important clinical manifestation of Diabetic Nephropathy. At the early stage, proteinuria may be intermittent and the microalbuminuria, at later stage, it is usually persistent and lots of proteinuria.

High blood pressure: The occurrence rate of high blood pressure is very high among patients with Diabetic Nephropathy. Patients with late stage of Diabetic Nephropathy usually have persistent and stubborn high blood pressure. And high blood pressure is associated with the worsening of kidney function.

Swelling: Patients can have the different degrees of swelling with the increase in urine protein and the decrease in serum albumin, especially the patients with Nephrotic Syndrome and heart function insufficiency, they can have the severe edema of whole body, even hydrothorax and ascites.

Nephrotic Syndrome: Some patients can develop Nephrotic Syndrome and present massive proteinuria (>3.5g/d), hypoproteinemia (blood albumin <30g/L), the abnormal lipid metabolism and different degree of swellings. Diabetic Nephropathy patients who are accompanied by Nephrotic Syndrome usually develop renal insufficiency in a short time.

Abnormal kidney function: At the early stage of Type 1 Diabetes, GFR increases. With the development of illness condition, GFR declines to the normal level, then decreases gradually. Also the levels of blood urea nitrogen and creatinine increase, finally the condition develops into renal insufficiency, Uremia. GFR seldom increases for patients with Type 2 Diabetes. Compared with renal insufficiency of non-Diabetic Nephropathy, renal insufficiency of Diabetic Nephropathy has the following features: (1) proteinuria is relatively much; (2) GFR is not very low relatively; (3) the kidneys don’t shrink in size obviously; (4) anemia appears early; (5) cardiovascular complications are more severe; (6) blood pressure is difficult to be controlled.

Generally speaking, Patients with Diabetic Nephropathy undergo dialysis earlier than patients with other kinds of kidney diseases. So the control of Diabetic Nephropathy is very important. Then how to control these symptoms of Diabetic Nephropathy is something patients care about.
