What Are the Types of Lupus and Their Symptoms

2013-01-23 08:54

What are the types of lupus and their symptoms? There are many different types of lupus and different people have different signs and symptoms. In the following content, we will help you know about lupus further.

There are mainly four types of lupus, they include:

Discoid lupus

It was the first type of lupus to ever be diagnosed. Discoid lupus affects only the skin, causing red, thick, scaly rashes on the face, neck and scalp. The rash of discoid lupus may last for a few days or a few years. After the rash goes away it can leave scarring and can cause hair loss in the scalp area. Discoid lupus usually occurs between the ages of 20 and 45. About 10% of discoid lupus cases progresses to systemic lupus.

Systemic lupus

Systemic lupus is usually referred to generally as “lupus”. It can affect almost any part of the body. 90% of people diagnosed with systemic lupus are women in their child-bearing years. Lupus Nephritis is a very common complication of systemic lupus, if it is not controlled well, the condition will develop Kidney Failure, which needs dialysis or kidney transplant in the near future. Then What Is The Treatment for Lupus Nephritis in China? The symptoms of systemic lupus include: hair loss, fevers, painful joints, swelling in the legs, rashes caused by sun exposure, loss of circulation in toes or fingers, swollen glands, ulcers inside the mouth, extreme tiredness and so on.

Drug-induced lupus

Drug-induced lupus is very rare and occurs as a result of taking certain types of medications for a long period of time. The most common medications linked to drug-induced lupus are hydralazine and procainamide. Men are likely to have drug-induced lupus than women. Symptoms of drug-induced lupus may be similar to those of systemic lupus. Once the medication is stopped, symptoms of drug-induced lupus typically go away, and it does not lead to systemic lupus.

Neonatal lupus

Neonatal lupus is also very rare. It occurs when a mother with certain kinds of lupus antibodies transfers them to her child at the time of birth. Generally speaking, neonatal lupus does not need to be treated and disappears within a few weeks. The symptoms of neonatal lupus include a rash, anemia, and rare heart problems that can lead to the death of the infant.

From the information mentioned above, the other three types of lupus are milder forms. Though there is no cure for systemic lupus, drug treatment is usually effective in relieving symptoms. Once lupus causes kidney damage, we do believe what patients want is to avoid dialysis and kidney transplant and improve the quality of life.
