Complications of ESRD and How to Treat Them

2013-02-28 16:57

Some complications of ESRD can be life-threatening, and they influence the life expectancy of ESRD to some extent. Then what are the complications of ESRD and how to treat them?

End-stage Renal Disease (ESRD) means that you are in the final stage of kidney disease, and your kidneys are not functioning well enough to meet the needs of daily life. If you have ESRD, your kidneys are functioning below 10 percent of their normal function. It is unavoidable that some complications of ESRD appear.

Possible complications of ESRD include the following:

●skin infections from itching and dry skin

●heart and blood vessel problems

●hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and liver failure

●fluid buildup around the lungs

●stomach and intestinal bleeding

●joint, bone, and muscle pain

●abnormal electrolyte levels

●blood glucose level changes, high blood pressure

●nerve damage

●weakening of the bones, joint disorders, and fractures

●brain dysfunction and dementia

As to the treatment for complications of ESRD, the proper western medicines will be used to treat the corresponding ones. In addition to the medicines, ESRD patients also need to notice the nutritional considerations. ESRD patients should avoid high-sodium diets. Many patients on dialysis can effectively control blood pressure without medicines on a low-sodium (2g per day) diet; it is essential that ESRD patients restrict their fluid intake in order to control blood pressure and avoid heart failure. The typical fluid allowance for patients on dialysis is 700 to 1,000 milliliters a day; elevated blood phosphorus levels can increase can increase risk of cardiovascular disease and death in ESRD patients. ESRD patients should avoid phosphate intake from processed foods. In addition, too much protein intake (more than 50g per day) can increase phosphate levels.

Some complications of ESRD can disappear naturally when the kidney function is increased, in that case, it is possible for ESRD patients to prevent kidney transplant.

In some cases, ESRD is not preventable. However, you should keep your blood glucose levels and your blood pressure under control. Always seek ESRD treatment which can help repair kidney damage and enhance kidney function if you experience any ESRD symptoms because early detection and treatment can delay or prevent progression of the disease.
