Treatment for Acute Renal Failure

2012-10-22 17:09

Acute Renal Failure means the sudden loss of the ability of the kidneys to remove nitrogenous wastes and creatinine. This acute loss of kidney function occurs over days to weeks. Electrolyte disturbances and loss of fluid homeostasis may occur. Acute Renal Failure is present in 1 to 5 percent of patients at hospital admission. The condition affects 15 to 20 percent of patients in ICUs. Infections and cardiorespiratory complications are the common causes of death in Acute Renal Failure patients.

Apart from the rapid decline in kidney function, patients with Acute Renal Failure often have few symptoms, such as high blood pressure, urination changes, breath odor, swelling and so on. Acute Renal Failure can be life threatening and requires immediate treatment. The goal of treatment for Acute Renal Failure is to restore kidney function and prevent fluid and waste from building up in the body.

Patients with Acute Renal Failure will be told that they may and may not eat to reduce the buildup of toxins normally handled by the kidneys. The diet may need to be low in protein, salt, potassium and high in carbohydrates; calcium or insulin will be given through a vein to help avoid increase in blood potassium levels; diuretics may be used to help patients with Acute Renal Failure lose fluid; and infection can be treated or prevented by antibiotics.

Many people with Acute Renal Failure need dialysis while they are waiting for their kidneys to recover. Dialysis can make patients feel better, it is not always necessary, but it can save patients’ life if the potassium levels are very high.

About half of all people diagnosed with Acute Renal Failure die within three months. Men are two to three times more likely to develop Acute Renal Failure than women. Most children with Acute Renal Failure make a fully recovery.
